My personal hypothesis, which is backed by far less evidence, is that the Malaise is an otherworldly/eldritch affliction. This initial "cure" manifests itself as the ability to disembody himself and turn into the slime/gas thing we know and love, which could then inhabit a new body. The cure may not even have had any side effect on him, he might have always been that way. It's likely the King was just an unprepared slacker who didn't really have a lot of work to do before the Malaise started spreading, so he dealt with it poorly (the Giant calls the King an incorrigible ass). Which would lead us to believe that something in the Sanctuary got so offended that it released the Malaise on the sea above, infecting the fish and the water supply, as an act of revenge.įrom there, with the poor hygiene habits of the people from the island, the Malaise spread quickly, which made the Beheaded/King invest in both a cure (which he got from the Alchemist, driving him mad) and damage control, which was done through the orders issued to the people, which ultimately ended in imprisonment or death. We know that the Stilt Village was the first place to be affected by the Malaise from the loading screen prompts (the water started turning dark and murky, and it was the first in line when the Malaise came). It was probably disregarding the presence of the Sanctuary moreso than intentional, but still, it caused disturbance in the catacombs below. Then they built the Stilt Village over it. Which is why, when you activate the switch, the Golems, Casters and Grenadiers get all angry. Many a times it's mentioned that those who dwell in the Sanctuary wish to be left alone and in peace. The first, more sound one, is that it came from the Slumbering Sanctuary. As for the Malaise, I have two hypotheses over how it came to be.
